Karla Evelyn Peña Zapata

Karla is the director and founder of PICY. She holds a Bachelor’s in Education from Universidad Autónoma de Yucatán (UADY) and a Master’s in Teaching Spanish as a Foreign Language from Universidad Antonio de Nebrija in Madrid, Spain. Her thesis on her methodology of Spanish language acquisition through cultural immersion received the highest level of recognition by the Ministry of Education in Spain, and is published in “la Red Electrónica de Didáctica del Español como Lengua Extranjera.”

Since 1998, Karla has been a Spanish professor in the faculty of Human Ecology at College of the Atlantic (COA) in Bar Harbor, Maine, USA and has served as the coordinator of the Yucatán immersion program since 2005.

From 1998 to 2003, she worked in the department of Education at the UADY as a Spanish professor and coordinator of the Departamento de Español para Extranjeros.

Her vast experience in teaching Spanish as a foreign language and in designing, coordinating, and directing immersion programs has allowed her to develop PICY’s methodology. Karla has worked with students from a wide range of ages, with different institutions, high schools, universities, and businesses from around the world.

Karla is passionate about education, multiculturalism, and above all, people.
