My final project was to study traditional Mayan healing beliefs. I wanted to stay with a curandero or "witch doctor" and began searching the surrounding pueblos for a healer. My host brother came with me and patiently explained to me any words or phrases I didn't understand. After visiting a few pueblos I finally found one woman with whom I felt a "click" or mutual understanding. We spoke for about 45 minutes and I took her phone number. A week later, I called and asked if I could stay with her family for a month and learn from her. I did not mention how my expenses would be paid. She answered "yes" without hesitation. The door is always open even to strangers. That's the difference. That's the Yucatan.
